Logan's Historical Walking Tour

The Historical Society of Logan offers a detailed walking tour some of  the historical homes, and buildings. Through out Logan you can view the Old Country and Victorian homes, Municipalities and Business Buildings.

1. Hocking County Court House -  Located on Main and Market St. Built in 1925. An Indian mound once occupied the site.
 
2. Keynes House - Located 88 South Market Street. Built in 1905 by Charles Keynes, owner of Keynes Mill. The house was later occupied by son, Robert, and remained in the Keynes family until being purchased for office space by the county.
 
3. Wright/ Lilley House - Located 183 East. Second St. Built in 1889 by Charles Wright, a prominent farmer in the later part of the 19th century. In the Queen Anne style, it has been converted to a law office.
 
4. Municipal Building - Located on Main and Mulberry St. Built in 1853 by Dr. Joseph Whipple, an early Logan doctor. Reportedly he bought the house as a wedding present for his daughter. City council has been meeting here since 1884. Placed on the National Register.
 
5. Snider/Star House - located 109 South Mulberry St. Built in 1896 by the son of John Rochester, an early Logan merchant. Purchased 1901 by J. J. Snider, who founded the Snider mfg. Co. Which ceased operations prior to 1930. Later owned by Dr. Lethia Starr, and was used as her office until her passing.

7. Rempel House/ Stagecoach Inn -  Located on Main and Walnut St. Built in 1867 by Capt. Wm. Bowen (Civil War) and purchased by Col. Ferdinand Rempel
( Civil War) in 1880. Rempel was an early industrialist and operated a stagecoach line that operated from Columbus to Pomeroy.

9. Petit/ Saving House - Located on 336 East Main St. Built in 1900 by E. O Petit, a Common Pleas Court judge. In the Queen Ann style, the brick layers were Kleinschmidt brothers, who did much of the early brick work in the Logan area.
 
10. Houston/ Potts House - Located on 359 East Main St.  Built in 1870 by A. Houston, president of Logan Mfg. Co. A fine example of Victorian architecture.  
 
11. Schempp House -  Located 98 N. Culver St. Built in 1881 by a grocer, it is now home of the Hocking Hills Historical Society. Open 1 to 4p.m. the last of May through October, other times by appointment.
 
12. Easterling / Price House - Located 87 North Orchard St. Built in 1872 by Amos parker,  house painter. Later it became Leonard's Funeral Home until 1930, then operated as a banquet house and tea room by the Easterling's until 1949. Now a private residence.
 
13. Huls/ Feik/ Cook House - Located 212 East, Hunter St. Built by A. E. Huls in 1902-03. The founder of Huls Printing Co. Later purchased by Chris Feik, benefactor of the Logan Hocking-County Library. 
 
14. Cherrington/ Price House - Located 100 East. Hunter St. Built in 1918 by Dr. M. H.  Cherrington, who with his brother founded the first hospital in Logan in 1908.
 
15. Acker/ Gafke House - Located 85 North Mulberry Street. Built in 1870, it was selected for it's Gothic Revival/ Italian architecture.
 
16. Work/ Hockman House - Located 171 North Mulberry Street. Built in 1880 by J. W. Work. An early boot and shoe manufacturer. Purchased in 1917 by Charles Nunemaker, the present owner is the family's fourth generation that lives there.

18. Dr. & Mrs. Neff House - Located 324 North Market Street. Built in 1904 by Geo. W. Rochester, a partner in the clothing firm of Rochester-Lytle in operation from 1902-29.
 
19. McCray/ Schmitzer House -  Located 286 North Market Street. This Greek revival house was built in 1886 by Wm. W. McCray, a school teacher and superintendent, who has been credited with laying the cornerstone for the public school systems in Logan.
 
20. Rochester/ Bowen House - Located 196 North. Market Street. Built by John Rochester, an early Logan merchant, in 1839.
 
21. United States Post Office - Located on the corner of Hunter and Market Street. Built in 1917.
 
22. Smith/Sines/Myers House - 79 West Hunter Street. Built in 1831 by Geo. Smith, who operated a tannery at the site of the present Trinity United Methodist Church. Additions were  made to house in 1910. The oldest known house in Logan.
 
23. McCarthy/Blosser /Dillion Building - Located 4th Main Street. Built in 1883 it has been home to four drug stores, law offices, a grocery, an elite social club, and a restaurant for 25 years. Now houses, offices and a sportswear business. Noted for its fine Victorian Italian architecture, it is listed on the National Register.
